Since I can remember, the music that has inspired me most is that of black artists. 5 years ago in the midst of back-to-back heartbreak I spent much of my time listening to R&B and soul music. I dove deeply into the history of Stax, Motown, Muscle Shoals and more, discovering so many incredible songs and artists that I might have otherwise overlooked. Soul music was deeply uplifting and healing in a way that I know no other music could provide for me. In particular, I latched on to four songs: “I’ll Suffer” by Barbara Lynn, “Take Time To Know Her” by Percy Sledge, “Until You Came Into My Life” by Ann Peebles and “The Sweeter He Is” by The Soul Children. I felt inspired to try to record them and wanted to challenge myself to sing in a way that could move sorrow and triumph through my body like I hadn’t been able to with my own songs. I didn’t know if I’d ever share these with anyone but wanted to do the songs justice so I worked hard on them with my dear friend and collaborator Jeremy Black. They pale in comparison to the originals. I’m releasing these 4 covers now because I want to pay my respects and come to terms with the fact that I have loved a culture yet have not always had the back of the people whose hardships, brilliance and strength has created the music that I love so much and that I have benefitted from so immensely. I bow down to the black artists that have profoundly influenced me and so many others. I’m following the lead of Jeff Tweedy and from now on will be donating 5% of my musical earnings to various organizations that work to dismantle racist and oppressive structures in our society. 100% of sales from this project will be split between ICYOLA, an LA-based orchestra that seeks to empower inner city youth through musical expression and the Loveland Project, a foundation that provides black women with financial assistance who are seeking therapy.

This is undoubtedly my single favorite album of all time. It feels like such a perfect culmination of all the themes and ideas Fleet Foxes has been working with since 2008. It answers many of the questions found on both Helplessness Blues and Crack-Up, and represents an incredible maturation and growth in Robin Pecknold's perspective. Their other albums are certainly masterpieces, but this, in my opinion, is their magnum opus. I doubt it will be recognized as such in its time. isaiah_stuart
